New MDA/ALS Center Opens at LSU

Newest clinic to be designated an MDA/ALS center is located at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine

Louisiana State University in New Orleans is the site of a new MDA/ALS center.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has designated the MDA clinic at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans as an MDA/ALS center. This brings the total number of these specialized clinics to 44.

MDA/ALS centers offer a multidisciplinary team approach for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), focusing on services and research, and offering the latest information, resources and therapies. The centers help people learn to better cope with the disease and participate in ALS research projects.

The director of the new center at LSU is neurologist Amparo Gutierrez, associate professor of clinical neurology, director of the Neurology Residence Program and director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic at LSU. Gutierrez is interested in research in the areas of ALS and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).
